The term “Ano” refers to the anus, which is the opening at the end of large intestine through which stool passes. And “Rectal” refers to the rectum, which is the area of large intestine above the anus. Ano-rectal, is the disorder that occurs at the junction of the canal (anal canal) and the rectum.
The anus is the opening where the gastrointestinal tract ends and exits the body. The anus starts at the bottom of the rectum, the last portion of the colon (large intestine). The anorectal line separates the anus from the rectum. Tough tissue called fascia surrounds the anus and attaches it to nearby structures. Circular muscles called the external sphincter ani form the wall of the anus and hold it closed. Glands release fluid into the anus to keep its surface moist. A plate-like band of muscles, called the levator ani muscles, surround the anus and form the floor of the pelvis. A network of veins lines the skin of the anus.
Anorectal anomalies are the problems affecting the structures of the anus and rectum. A person with an anorectal problems have some deformative features of the anus or rectum, known as anorectal malformation.

It is the important part of treating anorectal (fissure-fistula) disorders is to determine the cause of the condition.
Constipation is the main key cause of major anorectal disorders. Passing hard or large stools results inflammation of the anorectal area. Constipation during bowel movements, Chronic diarrhea, Childbirth is another cause for anorectal disorder (fissure-fistula). The other causes are :
The most common advices given to the patients with less severe disorders include a high-fiber diet, increased water intake and an application of ointment while pricking/itching sensation. Both patients and physicians should be aware of the need for adequate assessment of all anorectal symptoms because of the high incidence of chronic stages.
The treatment includes warm sits baths, drinking more water, increasing fiber in the diet, topical creams, and taking stool softeners. Sometimes exercise is recommended to soften stool.
A more complicated fistula, such as a horseshoe fistula (where the tract extends around both sides of the body and has external openings on both sides of the anus), is treated by usually laying open just the segment where the tracts join and the remainder of the tracts are removed.
The surgery may be performed in more than one stage if a large amount of muscle must be cut. The surgery may need to be repeated if the entire tract can’t be found.• Create scar tissue around part of the sphincter muscle before cutting it with a knife
• Allow the seton to slowly cut all the way through the muscle over the course of several weeks
The seton may also aid in the drainage of the fistula.
